Sissy Clay is studying the nutrient capture potential of street sweeping and storm drain cleaning. These maintenance practices remove urban gross solids, such as leaves, pine straw, and soil, from streets, catch basins, and storm pipes. Prior research has shown that urban gross solids contain nitrogen and phosphorus. Sissy’s research determines the mass of nutrients that can be removed from the stormwater system and downstream surface waters. While street sweeping is unlikely to fully replace SCMs, these practices can work in tandem with traditional SCMs to reduce nutrient transport.
